“the most widespread crackdown in a decade”

Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday that Iran launched “the most widespread crackdown in a decade” after its disputed presidential election last June.
According to official sources, security forces were responsible for at least 30 deaths. Some 4,000 people had been detained following the 12 June vote, mostly in street protests that were largely peaceful.
“The Judiciary, the Revolutionary Guard, the Basij militia, and the Ministry of Intelligence-all of which report to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei-were responsible for many serious human rights violations,” the New York-based human rights group...
