Iranian security forces have launched a nationwide wave of arrests in an effort to prevent protests from reigniting, according to witnesses and activists cited by Reuters.
Security forces, many operating in civilian clothing, are detaining activists, family members, doctors, lawyers, and minors. Detainees are being taken to unofficial sites, including warehouses and improvised detention centers, with families often given no information on their whereabouts.
Human rights groups estimate more than 42,000 people have been arrested since the protests began. Doctors report injured protesters being taken directly from hospitals into custody, while families describe night raids, confiscation of phones and computers, and threats of further arrests.
The crackdown comes amid rising tensions with the United States. Tehran says it is open to talks but warns it will respond to any attack, while condemning the EU’s decision to designate the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
