The US Treasury Secretary credited the Treasury’s economic “strategy” with sending the Iranian economy into a crisis in front of the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday.⁠ ⁠ Scott Bessent said that by creating a dollar shortage, the Iranian currency “went into free fall,” which sparked a series of protests in December.⁠ ⁠ He added that state officials and leaders have been transferring money out of the country, which he said was a “good sign that they know the end may be near”.
