Most people only see the CNN anchor. Few look at the roots. Research shared with me by Iranian–Australian artist Bella Gomrokchi shifts the focus to what is rarely discussed about the Amanpour family: a claimed hereditary link to Islam’s founding bloodline, and a history marked by corruption and proceeds of crime. During the 1942–43 famine, as millions of Iranians starved, a senior family member held responsibility within the wheat procurement system. What followed were corruption charges, conviction, imprisonment and land confiscations. Yet substantial holdings in North Tehran remained, and the suburb still carries the family name. History does not disappear. It explains posture.
